미국에 CCR이라는 밴드가 있었다.

Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Proud Mary, Cotton Fields, Suzie Q, Who’ll Stop the Rain 등이 우리에게 익숙하다.

그중에 Who’ll Stop the Rain이라는 노래의 가사를 바꿔 불렀다.

가사를 이렇게 바꾸었다.

중들이 모여 사는 고요한 절간에

개고기 올려놓고 염불을 하네

염불이 끝나면은 개고기를 먹겠지

빌어먹을 타불 관둬라 보살 오 관셈보살

이 노래는 불교를 공격할 의도로 부른 것은 아니다.

고교시절 사내 녀석들의 치기일 뿐이다.

그래서 뭘 좀 알게 되는 대학생 시절에는 부르지 않았다.

마지막의 ‘관셈보살’은 ‘관세음보살’이겠지만

노래를 부를 때에는 그렇게 줄여서 불렀다.

CCR 얘기를 하면서 Proud Mary를 들어보지 않을 수 없다.

그리고 Proud Mary는 Tom Jones가 부른 것도 지나칠 수 없다.

Proud Mary는 배의 이름이다.

영어권에서는 배에 이름을 붙일 때에는 항상 여성형 이름을 붙인다.
